How to export WordPress data to a CSV file - Sooner or later most of us will need to export WordPress data. Able to move the website or to get user information for marketing campaigns. Whatever the reason, if you need to export any type of data from your WordPress site for use elsewhere, this post will show you how.

WordPress has an integrated export function that will export posts, pages, comments, custom fields, terminology, navigation menus and custom posts. It works very well, but it exports the XML file. Is there a way to make WordPress export a CSV file instead of the default XML?

Definitely yes. But to do that, you will need a WordPress export plugin. We will use WP All Export.

WP All Export

Log into the WordPress admin panel and then click Add New.

Use WP All Export

We are focusing on how to export WordPress data as a CSV file, but the WP All Export plugin is capable of doing more than that. In particular, it has the ability to schedule automatic export, export user data and even export customers and orders from WooCommerce.

The whole thing that the WordPress Exporter cannot do.

To get that functionality from WP All Export, you'll have to choose the paid version of the plugin, but we think it's worth mentioning here.

Let's see how we can export WordPress data in CSV format.

In the left column, hover over the All Export link and click New Export.

If you are comfortable writing your own query, you have the ability to use WP Query Results. To keep it a little simpler in this post, we will use the Specific Post Type option.

Click the Choose post type section and select the post or page. These are the only options that will work in the free version from the plugin.

You will see a dialog box that helps you know how many articles will be exported.

Below that, there's the Add Filtering option, which is likely to appear attractive. But, it is also not available in the free version of the plugin.

"Customize Export File" is available, so we will look at what we are capable of doing. But first, perform standard data export without any customizations.

Export standard data

Click the Move article online button.

On the confirmation page, Scheduling Options, is not available to us in the free version. Usually, you will not need to make any changes in the Advanced Configuration section.

So we will click the confirm button and export the data to complete.

The results page gives you the option to download a CSV file or Bundle. You do not need to download the package unless you are using the WP WP All Import companion plugin.

There is also a public URL created for anyone with a downloadable web address. That might be useful if you want to give someone the output, but you don't necessarily want to give them admin access to the website (or send it via email).

Custom export

Like we did in the standard data export example, click the post type, then select the page or post.

Now on the dialog page, you will know how many posts will be exported. We will choose Customize Export File.

You can see that you now have the ability to choose which data to export.

The box on the left represents the output file. So if we don't change anything, the box will tell us the file will contain the post ID, Title and Content.

Click the Preview button to show you how the export will look.

To add data to the export, drag it into the box from the list on the right.

We will pull the username over.

Then if we look at the preview, you are likely to see the username there.

The drop down menu from Advanced you are allowed to change the CSV delimiter and the online export type dropdown menu you are exporting to an Excel file if you like it with CSV.

Epilogue

You also have the ability to use the same method we have just experienced to export page data.

We mentioned earlier that there is a paid version from this plugin. Since many of the plugins we have here have to pay, take a few minutes to talk about plugin developers.

We know we all love free stuff, but plugin developers are constantly providing tools that make WordPress as rich as it is. So if you like certain tools, or more importantly, if you benefit from using them, then consider supporting developers by buying licenses from them.
