During today's event, Apple introduced a new iPad Air that looks a lot like the iPad Pro line. In addition to having a larger 10.9-inch (2360 x 1640) Liquid Retina display, the new iPad Air features a laminated panel with True Tone technology and an anti-glare coating. To shrink this screen, Apple moved the Touch ID fingerprint sensor onto the power button on the top edge, making it the first iPad to have a biometric feature built into the power button.
Apple also does not forget to equip the new iPad Air with great performance thanks to the "homegrown" A14 Bionic chip, built on a 5nm process with a six-core CPU. Apple showed off a bunch of apps during today's press event, promising that app developers will be able to leverage the power of this new chip for their apps.
Apple has also switched to using the USB-C port on the new iPad Air, just like the iPad Pro, and it will support 20W charging and 5Gbps data transfer. Wi-Fi 6 is included as well, and versions that support LTE are promised by Apple for 60% faster LTE connectivity.
In terms of cameras, Apple is even borrowing the 12MP rear camera from the iPad Pro and upgrading it with improved video stabilization on the iPad Air. 7 MP front camera with Smart HDR feature and support for 1080p 60 frames per second video recording.
The new iPad Air will also support Apple Pencil 2, which can be attached to the side with a magnet for charging. And thanks to the iPad Pro-like design, the Magic Keyboard is also usable on the iPad Air. In addition, Smart Keyboard Folio and Smart Folio flip holster are also supported.
Apple is clearly creating the new iPad Air to bring most of the features of the iPad Pro line to users at a more affordable price. Even so, the iPad Air still doesn't have the 120Hz refresh rate display found on the iPad Pro, no Face ID and a LiDAR camera.
